Kevin De Bruyne’s status as one of the all-time great Premier League midfielders is safe — but what about his future?
Well, the Manchester City man could be on course to leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season when his contract expires and the list of possible destinations for the 33-year-old is starting to take shape.
In November, De Bruyne said he was “not worried” about whether he will be offered a new City deal. Now January has rolled around and the Belgian has the freedom to enter negotiations with overseas club, which makes him an interesting prospect for two markets: the Saudi Pro League and MLS.
After initially ruling out a move to Saudi, KDB has since backtracked and appears open to the idea while interest from MLS newcomers San Diego was reported by The Athletic in May.
Here is Jeff Rueter with some analysis:
📝 “Even in his mid-30s, De Bruyne would be a massive signing for a club entering its first season. The midfield is awfully thin as currently constructed, lacking even two players who are clearly capable of being regular starters in MLS.
“That depth would need to be bolstered even if De Bruyne signs given the likelihood he won’t be a “90 minutes, twice a week” option during the MLS season’s busiest stretch.”
