Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor to referee Euro 2024 quarter-final ties

Premier League referees Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver have both been handed a quarter-final tie at the European Championship on Friday.

Taylor, 45, has been selected to oversee the heavyweight clash between Spain and Germany in Stuttgart, leading a team that also includes Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, as well as video assistant referee (VAR) Stuart Attwell.

Oliver, 39, will then take charge of France against Portugal in Hamburg later on Friday, supported by assistants Stuart Burt and Dan Cook. Another Englishman, David Coote, will serve as the assistant VAR.

The appointments of Taylor and Oliver reward their performances at Euro 2024 and also keep them in contention for the semi-finals and final that follow. Much of their involvement would depend on England’s progress, with referees unable to officiate their own nation.

This is Taylor’s second European Championship after previously featuring at Euro 2020, as well as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar alongside Oliver.

Taylor has a strong standing in UEFA’s elite refereeing group after taking charge of showpiece fixtures such as the 2021 Nations League final and the 2023 Europa League final.

Oliver has already overseen three games at Euro 2024, most recently Germany’s 2-0 win over Denmark in the last 16.

The eight appointments of PGMOL officials for the quarter-finals take the running total up to 37 for the tournament so far.
