LAS VEGAS — Max Verstappen has won the Las Vegas Grand Prix, followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and teammate Sergio Pérez. Here’s what you need to know:
- It looked like a race to the finish line as Pérez, Leclerc and Verstappen battled with 15 laps to go. Red Bull aimed to work together to overtake the Ferrari with a double tow. With 13 laps to go, Verstappen stuck the move and became the new race leader, leaving Leclerc between the two Red Bulls. The Ferrari driver may have gone wide at Turn 12, which allowed Pérez to zip past, but Leclerc snagged back second on the final lap.
- At around the halfway mark, Verstappen and George Russell triggered a second safety car when the two collided and left debris on the track. A slew of cars dove into the pits for what likely would be their second and last pit stop of the race, but Ferrari chose to leave Leclerc out.
- Lando Norris’s race only lasted four laps. He became a passenger in his car when he lost it through the high-speed section just before the Strip straight. The McLaren driver said he was OK over the radio but has been taken to the University Medical Center “for further precautionary investigations,” according to the FIA.
- Despite a strong start, Williams did not secure a hoped-for double points finish. Alex Albon looked poised to bring home points until he went wide, dropping him back to P12.
