Kiemo Galerija (Courtyard Gallery) in Kaunas, Lithuania

This courtyard has been transformed into an alternative art space. Set in a small space between homes in Kaunas, Kiemo Galerija (Courtyard Gallery) was created by the artist Vytenis Jakas. He described the work as something that “focuses on the problem of location and asks: Where do we live? What do we call home? Is home a place, where the key clicks in the door lock? Is the notion of home a wider one, including relationships and connections between people?”

The Courtyard Gallery is located near the Kaunas Synagogue. During the interwar period, a large number of Jewish families lived here. Jakas decided to get acquainted with his neighbors and learn their stories, which he translated into art on the walls. Jakas said that he “decided to change the old habits of people through art and use the walls playfully, removing the borders between the internal and external spaces in the yard.”
