Jadon Sancho ‘showed why Manchester United bought him’ with Champions League display, says Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag says that Jadon Sancho’s performance for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League semi-final shows why Manchester United bought him.

Sancho, 24, was the standout player during Dortmund’s 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday.

The winger, who re-joined former club Dortmund on loan from United in January after a public disagreement with manager Ten Hag in September saw him exiled from the team for several months.

Ten Hag said of Sancho’s performance: “Yesterday he played very well and he’s a very good player. Yesterday he showed why United bought him and he showed he represents a high value for United which is good.

“I’m happy for Jadon, for the performance yesterday and we’ll see what is going to happen in the future.”

Special report – Inside Jadon Sancho’s Manchester United exile

Sancho spent several months training away from United’s first team after a disagreement with manager Ten Hag.

Refusing to apologise, Sancho expressed feeling like “a scapegoat for a long time” amid claims by Ten Hag that his performances in training had been poor, resulting in his exclusion from the matchday squad for the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal.

Since rejoining Dortmund, Sancho has made 17 appearances in all competitions scoring three goals and providing two assists.

When asked if he would be playing for Dortmund next season, Sancho, whose United contract expires in 2026, told CBS: “I really don’t know, I’m just focused on the present right now.”

United, who are sixth in the Premier League, are next in action against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday.
