Wes Anderson’s latest film is heading our way, and this one looks solidly in his well-established oeuvre (Exhibit A: the recent Asteroid City; Exhibit B: his Roald Dahl adaptations for Netflix).
Like Anderson’s works before it, this movie, The Phoenician Scheme, has a cavalcade of stars in it. The bulk of the story, however, centers on Benicio del Toro’s Zsa-zsa Korda—one of the richest men in what appears to be 1940s Europe—who leaves his estate to his daughter, the nun Liesl, played by Mia Threapleton. Korda gets into several plane crashes, it seems, and also has more than a few moneyed interests looking to murder him, which inspires the magnate (and potential spy, maybe?) to tutor his daughter to take over his businesses once he’s gone.
At least I think that’s what the film is about based on the recently released trailer. It’s hard to say, really, though the two-minute-and-thirty-second video does smash in many actors from the film’s ensemble cast, which includes Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, and Hope Davis.
Anderson wrote the screenplay for the film from a story developed by himself and Roman Coppola. The Phoenician Scheme has a limited release in theaters on May 30, 2025, and will be screening nationwide starting on June 6, 2025.
