Hurricanes take commanding 3-1 series lead vs. Devils, but Frederik Andersen injured

NEWARK, N.J. — Any excitement the Carolina Hurricanes can feel about going up 3-1 in a first-round series against the New Jersey Devils was tempered Sunday by concern over goalie Freddie Andersen, who left Game 4 and didn’t return after Devils forward Timo Meier made contact with him and sent him sprawling into the net in the second period.

The Hurricanes ended the day with a 5-2 win, but Andersen had been excellent to start the series.

Pyotr Kochetkov relieved Andersen, making ___ saves. The team announced Andersen would not return to the game but has not revealed the severity of the injury.

Carolina scored the first three goals of the game, including two by Andrei Svechnikov. New Jersey roared back in the second period with captain Nico Hischier and Meier both scoring — Meier’s shortly after Kochetkov took over for Andersen.

Jordan Martinook gave Carolina an insurance goal in the third, and Svechnikov finished off his hat trick with an empty-net goal.
