Donnie Yen Might Also Direct His John Wick Spinoff

We’ve known that a feature film centered on Caine, Donnie Yen’s John Wick 4 character, has been in development for awhile. What we haven’t known, however, are any details on the production beyond that it was in the works, with Yen obviously coming back to star.

In an interview with Collider to promote The Prosecutor, however, Yen—who directed that film— shared that he was in talks with Chad Stahelski, the overseer of the John Wick franchise, about directing that spinoff.

“I think both the fans, as well as the studio, want this to happen, and we’ll see,” Yen said. “I can only tell you that much. But yes, we are talking, and we are talking intimately. We’ll see what happens.”

Yen, who has directed several action films since his debut with 1988’s Tiger Cage, couldn’t share details on what the Caine spinoff would look like.

“I have to flesh it out,” he teased. “I have a couple of ideas in my mind of how I would like the story to go. But we’ll see. I don’t want to give away too much because I don’t know if I’m in that position to give that away. But they’ve been very persistent, and they’ve been very passionate about me taking on this project.”

He did add that he hoped if he was directing the film, Stahelski would be on call for support and guidance. “He better be there!” he said. “I want to make sure it’s going to be a lot of fun. My attempt is to try to make something that won’t disappoint the fans and the general audience.”

No news yet on when the Caine spinoff will go into production or if Yen will definitively be in the director’s chair. In the meantime, we can (re)watch John Wick 4 via Starz. icon-paragraph-end
