Actor George Clooney praised Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) as a strong political contender for the party’s 2028 presidential nominee. The post is up for grabs as Democrats look to regain a strong voting base after their November landslide loss.
“He’s smart. He ran a hedge fund. He ran the Robin Hood Foundation. He’s a proper leader,” the filmmaker said in a sit-down interview Tuesday with CNN’s Jake Tapper.
Clooney mulled over Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) and Michigan’s top leader Gretchen Whitmer (D) taking hold of the Democratic party but suggested that Moore emerges as a more ideal candidate.
“Who I think is levitating above that is Wes Moore. I think he is the guy that’s handled this tragedy in Baltimore beautifully. He’s two tours of duty in Afghanistan, active duty. He speaks sort of beautifully,” he told Tapper.
Moore has helped guide the Free State through recovery efforts after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and remained an avid supporter of President Biden throughout his re-election efforts.
Clooney notably urged the former president to drop out of the 2024 presidential race and swiftly endorsed Vice President Harris after she announced her bid for president.
The Oscar award-winning actor has already voiced his opinion on Moore’s ability to lead as a frontrunner in the next battle for the White House, three years ahead of a proposed campaign.
“The thing is we say Democrats fall in love and Republicans fall in line. Although I think Republicans have fallen in love a little bit. I like him a lot,” Clooney said.
“I think he could be someone we could all join in behind. We have to find somebody rather soon,” he added.
