About the Browns

General manager: Andrew Berry
Head coach: Kevin Stefanski
Last year’s record: 3-14

The Browns are stuck without a quarterback after Deshaun Watson failed to deliver, again, and finished the season on injured reserve. Watson ruptured his Achilles tendon in October, then suffered the same injury in January while in South Florida to rehab.

The 2024 Browns started four quarterbacks and finished at the bottom of the league in scoring and interceptions thrown. Star pass rusher Myles Garrett requested a trade after the season because he didn’t think the Browns were ready to win, but a huge contract extension helped him change his mind.

Another quarterback search is on, but the Browns have needs across both lines and at the offensive skill positions. It appears the plan is to give the core of this roster one last go.

Scouting the decision-makers

Berry prefers to draft young, high-upside prospects with outstanding athletic ability. But he hasn’t made a first-round pick in three years thanks to the disastrous Watson trade.

Now the Browns need a quarterback. Is there one worth taking at No. 2 in this year’s draft? If there’s not, do they want edge rusher Abdul Carter or two-way player Travis Hunter? There’s a lot of guessing involved here, and there must also be urgency from Berry to get it right.

• The Browns’ 2024 NFL Draft class

• LB Jerome Baker: One-year deal
• DT Maliek Collins: Two-year, $20 million deal ($13 million guaranteed)
• QB Kenny Pickett (trade): From Eagles for QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson and fifth-rounder
• OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka: One-year, $4.75 million deal

Browns’ key positions of need

Quarterback: The Browns will use a first- or second-day pick on a quarterback. They might even trade multiple picks to move up to No. 1 and select Cam Ward. It’s the most important position in sports, and they currently don’t have a starter.

Running back: It’s a good year to draft a running back, but how early will the Browns select one? Jerome Ford is the starter for now as he enters the final year of his rookie contract, and Nick Chubb remains unsigned.

Left tackle: Dawand Jones figures to be the starter, but he’s expected to miss the offseason program while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. Veteran Cornelius Lucas was added in March, but Cleveland could be looking for a long-term solution.

Wide receiver: The Browns feel good about their 2024 acquisition of Jerry Jeudy and believe in Cedric Tillman. But this group still needs more, specifically more speed. Cleveland would probably also like to add another tight end.

Linebacker: There’s no such thing as too much depth in the defensive front seven. Defensive tackle feels like a need, and linebacker becomes more of a priority if Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah can’t play in 2025 because of his 2024 neck injury. Right now, Owusu-Koramoah’s status is uncertain.
