It’s never a good sign when the voiceover in a horror trailer is done by a child. So when a young voice intones “This is a true story” at the start of the trailer for Weapons… well. It kind of tells you what you’re in for. Kind of. Sort of.
Plot detais for writer-director Zach Cregger’s follow-up to Barbarian have been trickling out ever so slowly, which gives a distinct sense that there is much more to the story. But the trailer neatly layers on to what we already knew, which is that this movie is about a town in which 17 kids all go missing on the same night. New wrinkle: They were all kids from the same classroom. A website associated with the film adds a detail about that classroom’s teacher, Ms. Gandy (Julia Garner): She’s a recent transfer who left a previous job because of “an incident.”
The synopsis says only, “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.” The trailer shows the expected angry parents, highlighting Josh Brolin, and then it changes tone. There’s a creepy vibe the whole time, but also a psychological horror feel—at first. And then it all goes haywire with rapid cuts that flash on a kid with a horrifying face, a woman stabbing her face with a fork, a smashed head full of black goo, somebody on fire, and more horrors.
Cregger’s Barbarian was a massive hit that led to a bidding war for this follow-up, which has been described as “a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia.” Along with Garner and Brolin, Weapons stars Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams, and Cary Christopher. It’s in theaters August 8th. Watch the trailer here.
