Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. suspended 1 game after ejection, social media post

TAMPA, Fla. — New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount by MLB, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Friday afternoon. Chisholm will appeal the suspension, which makes him eligible to play in Friday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Chisholm was ejected in the seventh inning of Thursday night’s game after arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire John Bacon. Chisholm took exception to a 3-2 pitch that he believed was below the strike zone, yet Bacon called him out instead of the second baseman taking first base on a walk. Chisholm stood at home plate and argued for several seconds before Bacon tossed him from the game while he was walking back from the dugout.

After getting ejected, Chishom went back into the Yankees’ clubhouse and posted “not even f—ing close!!!!” on his X account. The post stayed live for several minutes before Chisholm deleted it.

“I don’t want him doing that,” Boone said of his second baseman’s phone usage during the game.

An MLB spokesman told The Athletic on Thursday night that they were investigating the matter. Chisholm confirmed after the game that he did, in fact, post on X from the clubhouse. MLB regulations ban the use of electronic devices during games. The league’s social media policy also prohibits “displaying or transmitting content that questions the impartiality of or otherwise denigrates a major league umpire.”

Thursday night’s ejection was Chisholm’s fifth in his career and first as a Yankee. It’s an area that he’s tried improving over the past few seasons.

“He’s gotten a lot better,” Boone said. “He understands that he’s got to do better in those moments of trying to rein that in right there. That’s usually where I like to get involved. I think it’s another growth opportunity for him in an area that he has built a lot already.

“The good thing with Jazz is he’s a great guy, and he’s smart. He and I have a lot of really good conversations about these things. He usually does a really good job of learning from different moments.”

The 27-year-old said after his ejection Thursday night that he didn’t care that his social media post could be a potential violation, adding, “I did what I did. I could live up to my responsibilities.”

Chisholm enters Friday’s game with an uneven start to his 2025 season. Six of his 12 hits have been home runs, but he has a .272 on-base percentage and ranks in the top 10 in strikeouts. The biggest issue plaguing Chisholm through 19 games is that he isn’t making enough contact on pitches in the zone; his 69.4 percent in-zone contact rate ranks fourth to last in MLB. Only Rafael Devers, Gabriel Arias and Matt Wallner are making less contact than Chisholm.
