Maul: Shadow Lord Is Coming to Disney Plus Next Year

Do Sith also have nine lives? Are they cats? After being resurrected from his apparent prequel-era death at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Maul became a fascinating character in the Star Wars landscape, turning up during the Clone Wars, playing politics, doing a lot of crime, running Crimson Dawn… the man kept quite busy before meeting his real, actual demise some years down the line. And a new animated series will explore at least some of those adventures.

Maul: Shadow Lord was announced at this year’s Star Wars Celebration. It will star longtime Maul voice actor Sam Witwer as a Maul rebuilding himself after his Clone Wars-era defeat at the hands of Ahsoka Tano. As Variety put it, “Witwer revealed that the series takes place ‘about a year’ after the Clone Wars, so he’s ‘dusting himself off a bit’ after Ahsoka ‘kicked him to the curb.’”

Fans at Celebration got to see a trailer for the series, which io9 said “included various Criminal factions like the Pykes reeling from attacks on shipments, only for Maul to reveal himself as the architect. While the show’s look is a broad evolution of the art style seen in Clone Wars and later the Tales anthologies, there is also a new stylistic flourish in Shadow Lord‘s aesthetic that leans on rough lines and ragged edges, best glimpsed in Maul’s crimson saber blades, which look almost fiery in appearance.”

It seems Maul may pick up a new apprentice, too, though one notes that the “Darth” title is missing from the name of the show.
