RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons has suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle, ruling him out of action for several weeks.
The 21-year-old picked up the injury during Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League defeat against Liverpool. He was replaced in the 78th minute for Yussuf Poulsen.
Simons, a Netherlands international, underwent medical assessments, which confirmed the extent of the damage. However, Leipzig confirmed in a statement that “a decision on how to treat the injury is yet to be made”.
The injury is a significant blow for both Simons and Leipzig, as the playmaker has been a key figure in Marco Rose’s squad since rejoining the Bundesliga side on loan from Paris Saint-Germain for the 2024-25 season.

Simons has had a strong start this season, with three goals and two assists in 11 appearances across all competitions. This follows an impressive loan spell at Leipzig last season, where he scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in 43 matches.
He has also made an impact on the international stage, featuring in all six matches for the Netherlands at the European Championship in Germany earlier this summer, where he scored in the semi-final defeat to England.
Leipzig will now have to adjust without one of their star players, as they wished Simons a “speedy recovery”.
Rose’s side are next in action against Freiburg this Saturday.
