Last month, Aston Villa kicked up a real stink with their supporters when they announced ludicrous ticket prices for the club’s first season in Europe’s premier club competition in 42 years.

For today’s game, the cheapest prices for adult season ticket holders started at £70 and went up to £82, while non-season ticket holders had to pay between £85 and £97 for entry.

But, because of the sky-high demand for those tickets, they still sold out instantly.

In a statement, Villa’s president of business operations Chris Heck defended the eye-watering ticket prices by saying: “We need to generate as much revenue as possible through… ticket sales to ensure that we can keep the club where it rightfully belongs — competing (and winning) at the top of English and European football.”
